History & Heritage

Established in 1984, Capital Thunder Youth Hockey (CTYH) club was designed to encourage the growth and development of a high quality amateur youth ice hockey program that compliments and extends the educational options for young people ages 8-18; actively develops and implements creative avenues, which encourage young people to excel throughout the ice hockey program both collectively and individually and most importantly to provide a fun, instructional and competitive hockey experience.

TRAVEL HOCKEY
The Northern California (NORCAL) travel league consists of teams from Roseville, South Lake Tahoe, Stockton, Vacaville, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Fresno, Cupertino, San Jose, Santa Clara and Redwood City so you can see when it says "travel", it is just that.

The travel hockey season begins with tryouts in early June and ends with playoffs for qualifying teams in April. Most teams average 14-16 players with a minimum of 12 and maximum of 20. Practices are twice a week with an average of 20 league games depending upon the particular season.

In addition to league games, most teams participate in 2-3 tournaments per season. Tournaments are held on holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas-New Years break, Martin Luther King, President's Day and Labor Day weekend). Games are scheduled on the actual holiday with the exception of Christmas Eve or Christmas Day so you’ll want to plan accordingly. Tournaments can be as close as San Jose and as far as another state—sometimes even Canada.

All teams are regulated by USA Hockey, CAHA (California Hockey Association) and NORCAL Youth Hockey. Full equipment/gear is required to participate. This includes all pads, helmet and mouth guard every time you step on the ice.
